Contrary to what many people think, divorce in itself does not automatically result in the loss of American citizenship.
United States citizenship, once acquired, whether by birth or naturalization, cannot be taken away because of changes in marital status, including divorce.
If citizenship was obtained through naturalization based on marriage to a U.S. citizen, divorce may have implications during the initial naturalization process if it is still ongoing.
However, once citizenship has been granted, it becomes permanent, except in extremely rare situations, such as if it is proven that there was fraud in the naturalization process.
However, the situation is different when it comes to a Green Card obtained through marriage (and not citizenship). In these cases, divorce can affect the renewal or obtaining of a permanent Green Card, especially if the couple was in the conditional residence period (initial two years).
In these cases, the person may have to demonstrate that the marriage was legitimate and not just for immigration purposes.
